Hearts of Gold Chilren's Hospice is the first children's hospice and respite care facility in Nigeria. The house opened it does in October 2003 in response to a steadily increasing number of abandoned and orphaned sick children suffering from a vast range of illnesses.

These illnesses have the potential to end their lives in a matter of days, weeks, months or sometimes years.

When a diagnosis is given which offers no hope or when medical treatment have been tried, but a cure is not achieved, in many cases there is no treatment available.

For each of theses children with a terminal of like limiting illnesses, the hospice offers comfortable, caring and loving environment as there may well be all too few tomorrow.

Hearts of Gold provides respite support, palliative care (comfort and pain management) and end-of-life care for children with life-threatening and terminating illnesses. The house isn't a place of sadness and despair.

Anyone who visits will find it to to a home away from home atmosphere with these special children who allow us into their lives, often for all too short a time a plase where every precious moment counts. The atmosphere is like visiting a friend at home without the feel of hospital.

The term "Hospice" is an old English word meaning an Inn for weary travellers. Today, hospice stands for help and support for seriouly ill patiets travelling through life.

The hospice movement was pioneered in the mid twentieth century by Dr. Cicily Saunders,
founder of Saint Christopher's Hospice (opened in 1967 in London), and furtheredby Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's work with terminally ill patients.
